The Role
The Assistant Controller is a key member of the finance team, responsible for overseeing and managing the company's accounts receivable, US state tax compliance, US sales tax compliance, US 1099 management, US GAAP compliance, and audit support. This role will also support reporting and tax compliance in South Africa, Romania and Canada. This role requires a detail-oriented and analytical professional who can ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data and support the company's financial objectives.
What you’ll do:
Accounts Receivable Management:- Oversee the accounts receivable process, ensuring timely and accurate invoicing and collections.
- Monitor customer accounts for delayed payments and work with the collections team to resolve outstanding issues.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve cash flow and reduce days sales outstanding (DSO).
- Ensure compliance with US state tax regulations, including income, franchise, and other applicable taxes.
- Work with outside consultants to prepare and file state tax returns in a timely manner.
- Stay updated on changes in state tax laws and regulations and assess their impact on the company.
- Manage sales tax compliance, including the preparation and filing of sales tax returns.
- Maintain accurate sales tax records and ensure proper tax rates are applied to transactions.
- Collaborate with the sales and operations teams to address sales tax issues and questions.
- Oversee the 1099 reporting process, ensuring accurate and timely issuance of 1099 forms to vendors and contractors.
- Maintain and update vendor records to ensure compliance with IRS regulations.
- Address and resolve any discrepancies or issues related to 1099 reporting.
- Ensure financial statements and reports are prepared in accordance with US GAAP.
- Assist in the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with US GAAP.
- Provide guidance and support to the finance team on complex accounting issues.
- Assist in the preparation and coordination of internal and external audits.
- Ensure all audit requests are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Work with auditors to resolve any audit findings or issues.
What we expect from you:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
- Certified Accountant accreditation in South Africa or other relevant jurisdictions.
- Minimum of five years of accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP.
- Strong proficiency in Excel or Gsheets.
- Preferably with knowledge of Oracle Netsuite or similar systems.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Proactive, independent, and able to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments and regions.
- Fluency in English.
